We’ve Added Aggregation of Cities and Towns

The region’s largest energy consortium, serving exclusively nonprofits and government institutions, has won a contract with the consortium serving the Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns. This new approach to growing its consortium has the potential to increase PowerOptions’ electricity sales by about 20 percent while expanding its membership base for the delivery of new products and services such as its highly successful solar program.

This innovative new, forward-thinking approach to aggregation growth provides cities and towns in Rhode Island the same energy savings, budget stability, new product offerings, and contracting terms as its Members in Massachusetts at a critical time for municipal communities.

The Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns embraced the effort for its RI Energy Aggregation Program (REAP), which has served as the electricity aggregator to League members for 20 years. The program uses the collective purchasing power of Rhode Island municipalities to negotiate lower electric prices and provide budget stability.

PowerOptions teamed with its electricity supplier, Constellation New Energy, to offer the program. The new partnership for 29 cities and towns allows municipalities to receive highly competitive pricing for their energy supply while providing them with new services and enhanced customer support so those communities can focus their time and resources on better serving the public.

“Our mission is to save our members money so they will have more resources to put toward their missions, services, and operations,” said PowerOptions President and CEO Cynthia A. Arcate. “Given the changes in the market, we know we need to grow to continue being able to deliver on that promise. The League, similarly, recognized the benefits of being part of a much larger consortium to deliver greater benefits for their Members. We applaud their insight and look forward to working together to build on their 20 years of success.”

League Executive Director Brian Daniels said: “We always want to be ahead of the curve for the communities we serve so they can better serve the people – that’s exactly what’s happening here-by offering new products and advisory services to Rhode Island cities and towns.”

The partnership will allow members to select a competitively procured energy supplier, get guaranteed competitive prices, manage their energy use, access energy efficiency options, or choose clean energy options. It also provides PowerOptions’ team of energy experts to serve as advisors on any of their energy issues – a key window into the complicated world of energy purchasing most communities don’t have.

Constellation New Energy, one of the leading competitive energy companies, was selected by PowerOptions after a competitive solicitation in 2017 and will offer the Rhode Island communities the same contract and pricing and contract terms as under that program as well as products and services, including energy efficiency, electric vehicle chargers and on-bill financing of efficiency.

“Constellation is pleased to be working with PowerOptions to help it grow by expanding the opportunity for communities like the Rhode Island cities and towns to benefit from their model,” said Mark Huston, president of Constellation’s national retail energy business. “We think this is a powerful model that others can adopt to great benefit.”
